Pdf Summary
The study published in the AANA Journal aimed to improve CRNA knowledge and confidence in performing emergency front of neck access (EFONA) through a 3-week spaced learning intervention focusing on a scalpel-bougie cricothyrotomy procedure. Thirteen CRNAs participated in the study at a community hospital. The results showed a significant increase in CRNA knowledge, confidence, and skill when performing EFONA after the spaced learning program. The participants positively responded to the program and found it beneficial. The study highlighted the importance of continuing education for CRNAs in managing CICO situations, which are rare but critical emergencies. The implementation of a spaced learning program was feasible and showed promising results in improving provider skills and patient outcomes during CICO events. The study used statistical tests to analyze changes in knowledge, confidence levels, and skill times measured during the intervention. The study emphasized the need for future research with larger sample sizes and diverse populations to validate the effectiveness of spaced learning in enhancing CRNA skills for high-risk emergency events. Overall, the study suggests that spaced learning interventions can be effective in improving provider knowledge, confidence, and skills in managing critical airway emergencies like EFONA in CICO events.
