Pdf Summary
A study published in the AANA Journal examined the effects of racial/ethnic discrimination during clinical education on the well-being of student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs). The study found that there was a significant association between race/ethnicity and an increased incidence of discrimination. SRNAs who experienced discrimination during their training had significantly higher levels of distress compared to those who did not experience discrimination. The study also identified several themes related to racial/ethnic discrimination experienced by SRNAs, including overt discrimination, covert discrimination, disparate treatment, barriers to reporting, and incivility/bullying.

The study highlights the need to address racial/ethnic discrimination in clinical settings in order to ensure the success of minority SRNAs. It also emphasizes the importance of increasing the racial and ethnic diversity among SRNAs and the healthcare workforce as a whole. The study recommends that nurse anesthesia programs allocate resources to train employees to recognize and mediate instances of racial/ethnic bias, as well as develop support systems that encourage rapport among students, mentors, and faculty.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and impact of racial/ethnic discrimination on the well-being of SRNAs and calls for efforts to address these issues in order to promote a more inclusive and diverse healthcare workforce.
