Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to assess the knowledge of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) regarding the treatment guidelines for local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST). The study found that CRNAs had a low level of knowledge, with an average knowledge score of 47.3%. While most CRNAs recognized the importance of early lipid emulsion administration, over half were unaware of the recommended dose of epinephrine for LAST treatment. There was no correlation between knowledge level and the frequency of CRNAs' exposure to local anesthetic use. However, CRNAs who had immediate access to LAST treatment guidelines had significantly higher knowledge scores than those without access.

The study emphasizes the importance of addressing knowledge gaps in LAST management among CRNAs. Cognitive aids, such as treatment guidelines or emergency manuals, could be implemented to improve knowledge and ensure critical steps are not missed. Improving the dissemination of LAST treatment guidelines and regularly updating cognitive aids with the latest recommendations is recommended. Further studies on the use of cognitive aids to enhance CRNA knowledge of LAST management are suggested.

Overall, the study highlights the need for CRNAs to be knowledgeable about LAST and current practice guidelines due to their role in airway management, hemodynamic stabilization, and drug administration.
