Video Summary
The webinar, hosted by the Patient Safety Movement Foundation and the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, focused on how human factors and ergonomics support safer anesthesia care. Dr. Marie Ward introduced panelists Dr. Suzanne Wright and Professor Naj Meskati, who explained that human factors is the science of designing systems, technology, workflows, and environments to match human capabilities and limitations.

Both speakers emphasized that anesthesia is a high-risk, highly complex field involving constant multitasking, time pressure, medication use, teamwork, and rapidly changing conditions. Human factors helps reduce error by improving design, standardization, checklists, equipment interfaces, and communication. They stressed that the goal is not to blame individuals, but to ask why an error happened and how the system can be improved.

A major theme was safety culture and psychological safety. The panel discussed the need for a workplace where clinicians can speak up, question assumptions, report near misses, and respectfully challenge unsafe actions without fear. Strong leadership, humility, teamwork, and learning from success as well as failure were highlighted as essential.

The speakers also described how anesthesia became a leader in patient safety through early adoption of monitoring technologies, simulation, algorithms, and standards. Looking ahead, they discussed AI and digital tools as potential safety enhancers if they support, rather than replace, human judgment.

Their closing message: stay curious, slow down during critical moments, use human factors tools consistently, and treat safety culture as the foundation for all other improvements.
