Oropharyngeal airways (OPA) or nasopharyngeal airways (NPA) sometimes require chin-lift or jaw-thrust (CLJT) maneuvers to relieve airway obstruction which creates the burden of continuous hands-on care by the anesthesia provider. While the CLJT maneuver is common for all procedures in this study, it was most often used in patients receiving OPA/NPA airways, particularly during deep sedation. This pilot study of a new DPA device found that the need for a manual airway maneuver was reduced when compared with similar patients who received OPA or NPA devices and is comparable with the rate for natural airways.  The DPA device addresses a key challenge of maintaining a patent airway without continuous manual interventions, which is especially beneficial in fast-paced, often understaffed environments.

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Understand the functionality and benefits of the distal pharyngeal airway (DPA) device in reducing the need for manual chin-lift and jaw-thrust maneuvers compared to traditional oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways during anesthesia.
  2. Analyze the impact of airway management techniques on patient outcomes, particularly in ambulatory surgery centers, with a focus on preventing airway obstruction and ensuring airway patency during deep sedation and extubation.
