No professional organization has published clinical practice guidelines or position statements on the risk stratification or perioperative management of patients with a positive drug screening for cocaine or methamphetamine.This lack of guidance has led to inconsistent practice among anesthesia professionals. We developed an evidence-based algorithm to guide anesthesia professionals on the risk stratification,screening, and management for patients with a history of cocaine or methamphetamine use in the elective surgery setting. This algorithm will be applied in various case studies to assess its effectiveness in supporting decision-making. Lastly, we will discuss the limitations of the research, ethical considerations associated with drug screening, and recommendations for future research and practice.
Learning Outcome(s):
- Discuss the physiological changes and perioperative risks associated with cocaine and methamphetamine use.
- Perform risk stratification on patients with a history of cocaine and methamphetamine use.
- Identify the indications for urine drug screening before an eletive procedure.
