This journal course reviews updated, evidence-based approaches to initiating buprenorphine for the management of opioid use disorder (OUD). Learners will explore buprenorphine’s unique pharmacologic profile, compare traditional induction with newer microdosing and bridging strategies, and examine regulatory, clinical, and practical considerations for implementation. Emphasis is placed on minimizing withdrawal, improving patient comfort, and supporting safer, more effective transitions from full opioid agonists to buprenorphine in diverse clinical settings.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe buprenorphine’s unique pharmacologic profile and safety features that distinguish it from traditional opioid agonists.
- Compare and contrast microdosing and bridging strategies for buprenorphine initiation.
- Identify regulatory requirements, clinical considerations and implementation challenges for initiating buprenorphine in opioid-dependent patients.
