Perioperative cognitive screening tools trialed in anesthesia are not routinely incorporated into clinical practice related to validity, reliability, or practicality concerns.  Neurocognitive decline associated with surgery and anesthesia complicates recovery for up to 70% of older surgical patients. The phenomenon distresses patients, loved ones, and caregivers and is associated with diminished functional recovery, prolonged length of stay, increased care dependency, increased risk of long-term morbidity, increased mortality risk, and escalated healthcare costs.  Implementation of multicomponent perioperative brain healthcare pathways may promote brain health among older surgical patients, mitigate POD, and reduce associated healthcare costs.

Learning Outcome(s):

  1. Understand the perioperative cognitive screening tools.

  1. Describe the potential of perioperative cognitive screening tools to promote brain health among older surgical patients.
