The anesthesia provider may not know how to identify and confirm cannula placement to avoid the potential morbidity and complications associated with accidental intraarterial drug injection.  Accidental intraarterial placement of a venous cannula is a potential complication in pediatric patients and can lead to severe morbidity.  Anesthesia providers are well-versed in regional and aberrant arterial anatomy; indicators that can help identify an arterial puncture; and the potential effects of different anesthetic drugs when injected intraarterially.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe the indicators that can help identify an arterial puncture.

  • Understand the potential effects of different anesthetic drugs when injected intraarterially.

  • Confirm the cannula placement to avoid the potential morbidity and complications associated with accidental intraarterial drug injection.
