The anesthesia provider may not know how to identify and confirm cannula placement to avoid the potential morbidity and complications associated with accidental intraarterial drug injection. Accidental intraarterial placement of a venous cannula is a potential complication in pediatric patients and can lead to severe morbidity.  Anesthesia providers are well-versed in regional and aberrant arterial anatomy; indicators that can help identify an arterial puncture; and the potential effects of different anesthetic drugs when injected intraarterially.

Understand the potential effects of different anesthetic drugs when injected intraarterially.

Confirm the cannula placement to avoid the potential morbidity and complications associated with accidental intraarterial drug injection.
