Current sedative and analgesic agents used on patients that experience tracheal mucosal inflammation and irritation caused by the ETT can have negative effects on the patient, so an alternative method is needed to enhance patient comfort during intubation and decrease the need for sedative medications.

Tracheal mucosal inflammation and irritation caused by the endotracheal tube (ETT) during intubation can result in symptoms of pain and discomfort, creating challenges for patients. Various sedative and analgesic agents are used to mitigate these symptoms, however, there is concern that such medications may contribute to prolonged duration of intubation, length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, as well as increased morbidity.

The anesthesia provider utilizes buffered lidocaine as a tool to enhance patient comfort during intubation and potentially decrease the need for sedative medications.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify how buffered lidocaine can be used as an endotracheal tube cuff media in immediate postoperative cardiac surgery patients.

  • Explain how buffered lidocaine can reduce symptoms and sedation requirements, improving patient comfort during intubation.
