Difficult and failed airway management remains a significant cause of anesthesia-related morbidity and mortality. Failed airway management guidelines include performing a cricothyrotomy as a final step. Correct identification of the cricothyroid membrane (CTM) is essential for safe and accurate cricothyrotomy execution. Failed cricothyrotomies are attributed to many factors, such as equipment issues, improper technique, and inadequate training, however, misidentification of the CTM by inspection and palpation is most common.

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Understand how ultrasound-guided needle cricothyrotomy can significantly improve a CRNA's knowledge, confidence, and skills.
  2. Describe the effectiveness of hands-on ultrasound training using live and cadaveric models when performing a cricothyrotomy.
