This course explores the expanding role of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in anesthesia practice, with a focus on what CRNAs need to know as these medications become more widely used for type 2 diabetes, obesity, off-label indications, and emerging therapies. Learners will review GLP-1RA pharmacology, mechanisms of action, perioperative implications, and current professional recommendations related to patient safety. Special attention is given to delayed gastric emptying, pulmonary aspiration risk, glycemic control, medication reconciliation, unregulated peptide use, and the importance of individualized, patient-centered care through thorough preoperative screening and interdisciplinary communication.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the pharmacology and mechanism of actions of GLP-1 RA medications.
- Analyze the perioperative implications of GLP-1 RA medications as they relate to patient safety.
- Apply current professional guidelines and evidence-based recommendations to execute safe patient-centered anesthesia care.
