This article is important because it highlights critical gaps in the healthcare system, particularly in the education and training of healthcare professionals, such as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), in caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). 

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Explain the unique healthcare challenges faced by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and identify strategies to address these challenges in clinical practice.
  2. Demostrate an understanding of the importance of incorporating specialized training on anesthesia care for patients with IDD into nurse anesthesia programs and will evaluate the impact of such training on healthcare outcomes.
