Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals are a growing demographic worldwide. An estimated 0.7% of the youth in the United States (ages 13–17) identify as transgender. Gender-affirmation surgery has been established as an effective and medically indicated treatment for gender dysphoria. TGD patients present with significant, and unique complexities in the perioperative environment. The healthcare discrimination faced by TGD individuals is a pervasive problem that has persisted mainly due to a lack of adequate medical training, minimal exposure to educational content that specifically discusses TGD patient care and anesthesia management. With the lack of clinical anesthesia research studies on transgender patients having both gender-affirming surgery and non-gender-affirming procedures. it is critical to evaluate perioperative outcomes for gender-diverse youth to deliver high-quality, effective, safe, and affirming care. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and specialty anesthesiology teams are essential in providing gender-affirming perioperative care and can actively mitigate further healthcare discrimination against TGD patients of all ages.

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Summarize the current climate for Gender-Diverse individuals in the Perioperative Setting.
  2. Describe Gender-Affirming Care, current clinical anesthesia management and its application in anesthesiology.
  3. Analyze anesthesia and perioperative outcomes for gender-diverse individuals undergoing gender-affirming procedures.
