The article addresses the gap in the application of Surgical Safety Checklists (SSCs) in non-operating room (non-OR) settings, particularly in clinics offering in-office procedures with sedation and anesthesia. While SSCs are widely implemented and mandated in traditional operating rooms to enhance patient safety and reduce preventable errors, their use in office-based surgery settings is limited. This gap is critical because a significant number of procedures, including 17-24% of elective ambulatory surgeries, are now conducted outside of hospitals, where safety risks remain prevalent.

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Describe the purpose and components of a Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) and explain its importance in reducing preventable surgical errors and improving patient safety in both operating room (OR) and non-OR settings.
  2. Outline the steps for implementing an SSC protocol, including staff training, compliance monitoring, and evaluating its effectiveness in achieving patient safety goals within a healthcare facility.
