The impact of adverse events on the caregiver has been well described in the literature since Albert Wu coined the phrase "second victim" in2000. Autonomy, stoicism, and innate resilience are expected attributes of healthcare professionals. The expectation by colleagues that fellow healthcare professionals will ably manage the stresses of practice often predisposes healthcare professionals involved in and impacted by an adverse event to experience isolation, blame, and shame. Moreover, seeking emotional support through conventional organizational channels such as behavioral health is inherently stigmatized, making it challenging for an affected healthcare professional to access support without fear of repercussion or judgment. Clinician peer support programs are recognized as an important component of institutional wellness and follow a well-described and structured method to help limit the harmful effects of burnout on provider health, including increased risk of accidents, depression, alcohol abuse, and suicide.
This session will share lessons learned from the sharp end of care from pioneering researchers with 40 years of collective experience supporting the caregiver through the development and implementation of clinician peer support programs. It will explore the relationship between the management of adverse medical events and clinician peer support programs and propose synergistic approaches that enhance the wellbeing of the healthcare professional and promote a culture of safety within organizations that enhance quality and safety structures.
Learning Outcome(s):
