There are currently gaps in knowledge in the nurse anesthesiology community regarding the utilization of bispectral index (BIS) monitoring for elderly patients undergoing anesthesia.  Aging leads to anatomic and physiologic changes in the brain, making it more sensitive to the depressant effects of anesthetic medications and increasing the risk of postoperative neurocognitive complications such as postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD).  The BIS™ Monitoring System is a neuromonitoring tool for anesthesia professionals to assess the depth of anesthesia.  The integration of the BIS™ Monitoring System into clinical practice can contribute to a more tailored and patient-centered approach to anesthesia management, ultimately improving perioperative outcomes and safety.  

Learning Outcome(s):

1. Review current research related to anesthesia and post operative brain health in the elderly patient population.
2. Discuss brain monitoring considerations for elderly patients receiving anesthesia.
3. Discuss clinical applications for the use of monitoring and processed EEG for elderly patients receiving anesthesia.
