CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists help drive change to reduce maternal-related deaths and implement prevention strategies to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in pregnancy-related mortality. Healthcare professionals must maintain their knowledge, skills, and competencies with evolving obstetric analgesia and anesthesia practices. Adoption of evidence-based techniques and skills supports CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists in improving access to care and advancement of high-quality obstetric anesthesia and analgesia care for their patients.
To assist in advancing this skill set, AANA is introducing a new micro-credential program designed to elevate knowledge, skills, and competencies for CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists in Obstetric Anesthesia. The micro-credential process will include virtual and in-person educational options covering topics such as maternal and fetal physiology to develop the anesthetic plan of care, anesthesia and analgesia techniques, managing anesthesia complications, delivering anesthesia care during obstetric complication, leading interdisciplinary teams, providing equitable anesthesia care for the parturient, and advanced maternal health topics.
In order to earn the PROficiency Obstetrics Micro-Credential, you must do the following:
- Attend and receive CE credit for AANA's Spinal/Epidural with Obstetrics Essentials Workshop, including the online modules*, and
- AANA's Advanced Obstetrics Workshop (coming soon!) OR AANA's Advanced Obstetrics Simulation Modules (coming soon!), including the online modules
To show proof of attendance, you will need to upload a copy of your CE certificate for each activity. The micro-credential will include a digital badge, which is a visual representation of this achievement, signifying that you have obtained a level of knowledge. Digital badges can be found
here or on the left side menu under Digital Badges.
*CRNA/nurse anesthesiologists who believe that their current clinical practice includes or surpasses the competencies described in the Spinal/Epidural with Obstetric Essentials hands-on workshop, and wish to obtain the Obstetric Anesthesia Micro-credential, may apply for a waiver from that workshop requirement. More information can be found here.
