It is unclear if Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) are prepared with the knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based practice (EBP) for cuff pressure assessment.

Anesthesia providers often assess endotracheal cuff pressure subjectively, which is unreliable and inaccurate, with up to 83% of pressures falling outside the safe range. Objective assessment using a manometer is the evidence-based best practice. Normalization of deviance from this recommendation leads to adverse patient outcomes which includes an increased incidence of cough, hoarseness, sore throat and more severe mucosal injury on fiberoptic assessment.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe at least three barriers to SRNAs using a manometer to assess endotracheal cuff pressure.

  1. Identify four knowledge components to include when providing comprehensive teaching on endotracheal cuff pressure monitoring.

This program has been prior approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology for 0.25 Class A CE credits; Code Number 1044766; Expiration Date 2/20/2025.
