Heparin is the standard anticoagulant in cardiovascular procedures due to its cost-effectiveness, availability, and reversibility. However, in patients with contraindications, such as a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), alternative anticoagulants like argatroban may be necessary. This course provides an overview of safe and effective anticoagulation strategies for these special populations.
Participants will gain familiarity with the use of direct thrombin inhibitors, such as argatroban, as a viable alternative during procedures like carotid endarterectomy. The course will also discuss the nuanced decision-making involved in administering heparin to patients with a remote history of HIT, emphasizing that it is not always an absolute contraindication. Through this training, providers will be better equipped to manage anticoagulation in cardiovascular procedures when heparin cannot be used.
