Patients on GLP-1 agonists or with gastroparesis often present for upper endoscopy procedures with a full stomach despite fasting, increasing the risk of pulmonary aspiration. This course addresses the challenges of traditional preanesthetic assessments, which rely on fasting times and patient reports, and introduces gastric antrum point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) as a crucial tool for identifying a full stomach.

Participants will learn how incorporating gastric antrum POCUS into the preanesthetic assessment can lead to safer and more efficient airway management strategies, particularly for high-risk patients with gastroparesis. This course emphasizes the importance of using this technique to improve patient safety in upper endoscopy procedures.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe how various factors such as GLP-1 agonist medication use can lead to fasted patients presenting for procedures in endoscopy with a full stomach.
  2. Identify the need for gastric antrum POCUS scanning prior to upper endoscopy procedures as part of a routine preanesthetic assessment.
