Despite the recognized benefits of Pre-Operative Evaluation (POE) clinic assessments, their impact on patients using methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone for chronic pain or substance use disorder (SUD) remains underexplored. These patients present unique perioperative challenges due to the complex pharmacology of these medications, and deviations from evolving perioperative recommendations can lead to difficult pain management and suboptimal outcomes.
This course focuses on optimizing POE clinic assessments for this patient population. Participants will gain insights into current guidelines and the importance of incorporating non-opioid multimodal analgesic strategies. By standardizing POE practices, anesthesia providers will receive valuable guidance to enhance preoperative planning, improve perioperative outcomes, and increase patient satisfaction.
