There is a notable gap in the medical literature regarding the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on the risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) surgical patients compared to their cisgender counterparts. Current research on PONV rates in TGD patients is limited, leaving anesthesia providers without sufficient evidence to guide effective PONV prophylaxis strategies for this population.

This course aims to address this evidence gap by reviewing available research and providing insights into how GAHT may influence PONV risk. Participants will gain access to evidence-based recommendations to better inform their approach to PONV management in TGD patients. By integrating these findings, anesthesia providers can enhance their practice, improving postoperative care and outcomes for this diverse patient group.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe the potential impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients undergoing gender-affirming surgeries.
  2. List and compare the rates of PONV between TGD patients and matched cisgender controls.
  3. Apply the findings to clinical practice by considering sex assigned at birth as a factor when evaluating risk factors for PONV in TGD patients undergoing surgical procedures.
