Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are two of the most common complications patient experience following surgery and the complications can range in severity from increased length of post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) length of stay to increased mortality. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of  two common antiemetics (droperidol and haloperidol) to help providers optimize PONV prophylaxis measures.

Description of current state: An extensive literature review revealed only one previous study that directly compared the efficacy of droperidol and haloperidol (Wang 2008). Although this study identified no efficacy difference between the two drugs, the study was not highly powered.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Express PONV risk factors present in research population.
  2. List exclusion criteria utilized in study.
  3. Identify the definition of PONV utilized for this study.
  4. Define secondary outcomes utilized to compare the efficacy of droperidol and haloperidol.
  5. Demonstrate understanding PONV efficacy differences of droperidol and haloperidol.
