There is a lack of understanding of the second victim phenomenon among respiratory therapists as a homogenous group. Respiratory therapists work in complex environments and are at risk for experiencing stressful or traumatic clinical events. Without an understanding of their experiences after these events, they are at high risk for physical and psychological sequelae.

A thorough understanding of second victim experiences allows for implementation of adequate supportive resources for respiratory therapists to work through the post-event experience and reach a state of thriving.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Discuss the concept of respiratory therapists as second victims.
  2. Identify three specialty-specific high-risk events that are likely to trigger the second victim experience among respiratory therapists.
  3. Identify the most desired form of support among respiratory therapists as second victims.
