America is currently facing an opioid epidemic that continues to take lives due to overdose. An estimated 2 million Americans are dependent on prescription pain pills and street drugs. Although opioids are prescribed to treat chronic pain, the outcomes for these patients are often poor. Although acute surgical pain often requires opioids postoperatively to relieve suffering, opioids are commonly misused by the patient even months after surgery. In order to prevent individu¬als from progressing to long-term opioid use, there is an urgent need to better determine the predictors of long-term opioid use, specifically for neurosurgery and orthopedic patients.

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Identify patient characteristics that predict long-term opioid use after an orthopedic or neurosurgery procedure.
