The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the principles and goals of writing curriculum that is both practical and applicable to nurse anesthesia educators who may be new to the faculty role, or who are looking for a refresher on the topic. Several topics will be covered, including key principles that faculty should incorporate when involved in writing curriculum which are based on best-practices. At the end of this presentation, you should be able to describe what a successful curriculum design is like and what resources are required to accomplish the writing.  An overview of curriculum design, course descriptions, and course syllabi will be provided as well as examples of how courses can be mapped to accreditation standards to foster a quality education environment for graduate nurse anesthesia students.

Learning Outcome(s):
  1. Describe the attributes of a successful curriculum design.
  2. Identify the resources required to write curriculum.
  3. Discuss key curricular elements for nurse anesthesia education for all programs.
  4. Compare the differences in curriculum between a practice doctoral program housed in a college of nursing with a practice doctoral program housed in college of nursing versus another college of health professions.

The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) recognizes the importance of foundational knowledge of educational principles and requires all core CRNA faculty, including the program administrator, assistant program administrator, and course directors, have formal instruction in curriculum, evaluation, and instruction (COA Practice Doctorate Standards, Section B 17.  This includes completed educational content that can be viewed on a transcript from an accredited higher education institution, an AANA-approved continuing education program or a continuing education program approved by another nationally recognized professional approval organization. The content on curriculum, instruction, and evaluation in this CE series may help fulfill the requirement for formal instruction in curriculum, instruction, and evaluation.
