This journal course explores the importance of trauma-informed care in anesthesia practice, focusing on the unique challenges and perioperative risks associated with patients experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants will examine how PTSD can influence anesthesia management, including increased anxiety, altered pain perception, and the risk of emergence delirium. The course reviews evidence-based pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, strategies for identifying and minimizing trauma-related triggers, and the importance of individualized anesthetic planning. Emphasis is placed on integrating trauma-informed principles to enhance patient safety, reduce perioperative complications, and promote compassionate, patient-centered care throughout the surgical experience.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe three aspects of post-traumatic stress disorder relevant to anesthesia management of this population.
  2. Discuss the pharmacological management and risks associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.
  3. State three preventable measures anesthesia providers can take to decrease triggering events and improve patient experience in surgery.
